Neoclassical architecture proudly standing next to Communist buildings. Massive governmental structures which have been finished in the wrong period. Long avenues, vintage cafés and buildings with high risk for a collapse. A lot of personality within an emerging city of which I have high hopes. Hi Colin! Such a great city to visit. It made me want to visit the rest of Eastern Europe. Are you in Australia at the moment or it’s just my imagination?

In terms of architecture, what are the three cities you recommend in Australia and New Zealand?

Melbourne is top, I think, for mix of old (Victorian gold rush Italianate) and new, including domestic. Sydney has some good domestic works, too, but generally pretty poor. I don’t know about NZ, I’m afraid – I always head the other way to Europe!
