Since the twentieth century, chairs have been changing with every twist of fashion producing beautiful furniture items. However, with new technologies emerging, improvements in ergonomics and the necessity to reuse materials, chair design has changed its aim of being “beautiful” to its intention to be “useful”. Not only do modern chairs work on comfort and physical appearance but also on sustainability.
With all this, who wouldn’t want to try these amazing chair designs? My favourite – the last one. Which one is yours?

I like the loop chair best but they are all very interesting. It’s surprising how few chairs are beautiful, comfortable and well made.

Indeed. And while doing research I found so many others. I was happy to find more sustainability and reuse in chair design.

They’re all so beautiful in their own way. While I don’t love the look of it (although I prefer it from close up), I love the idea behind the Lost in Sofa; very whimsical! Fun post!

One of the problems with this modern world, and teaching such things as design in college, is that thee are more and more people who want to add something to this world before they die. And each person who wants to leave his mark, has to change something… for that matter, each person who wants to get a PhD has to find some new original topic to write one. What happens, is that we get a disproportionate amount of ridiculous work. When it comes to chairs, before people thought about their looking good, they used to think about how comfortable they would be for the person sitting. I like straight backed simple chairs. But I’m sure there’re a lot of people who will rush to grab these versions.

What you say makes sense but I don’t think these particular designs are only created as beautiful or comfortable items. Many of them are aesthetical and functional experiments (like the Cabbage Chair) that not only do they intend to be comfortable but also try to reuse materials (making them sustainable designs). We should be open to innovation!
