Brief Description: ENDESA Pavilion is a self-sufficient solar prototype that is used as control room for monitoring and testing several projects related to intelligent power management. A facade composed by modular components, like solar brick, that respond to photovoltaic gaining, solar protection, insulation, ventilation, lighting … The same parametric logic adapt façade geometries to the specific environmental requirements for each point of the building. Les Cols Pavilions

Brief Description: This 13th-century house was converted into one of the world’s best dining establishments. Then five luxury rooms where guests could also spend the night were recently added. These spaces are generated from partial coverings, between the high walls that protect them, and a route that descends. Everything is made of glass. A world of unexpected textures and reflections resemble the typical mountains in the town of Olot and the volcanic region of la Garrotxa. Read more here.

Brief Description: This building is a territorial support facility for the works of the Geological Institute of Catalonia, but it is also built for all the geologists from all around the world who come to the Pyrenees to learn Hydrocarbon Geology. The facility is conceived as an abstraction of an “iron monolith”, compact and of pure shape, which represents in one of its sides a “balma” (in catalan, a type of small cave in the base of a rocky formation) which guides us to the inside. It is formed by means of an exterior skin, the façade, formed by Weathering Steel plates perforated with little holes of different diameter. The plates reproduce a monochrome version of the geological map of the region. Read more here.

Brief Description: The old local market of Ferreries, after falling into disuse for several years, has been restored and extended to become the new Cultural Center of this neighborhood. An important relation it’s established between the market and its extension, understanding the lines of horizontal composition -cornice and skirting board-, opposing the height of the new facade, contrasting the white interior of the nave, of blended and homogeneous light, of acoustics muffled by wood strips; to a new dark facade, of accentuated shadows by the grooved texture of the material. Brief Description: Teruel’s underground, as thematic parks as Dinópolis want to spread, is full of discoveries that remind us the lost existence of a powerful life in the origins of the province. The big buried volume pushes the earth surface till it brakes and produces a new urban topography. The visitants will settle this surface that becomes into a public square, and they will go down in between the stratums, being entertained by meeting activities, fun and sports. Read more here.

Spanish Pavilion Expo Zaragoza 2008

Brief Description: The task at hand was to raise a building that would represent Spain while addressing the Expo theme: water and its environmental implications. Evoking the space of a forest, or of a cluster of bamboos on a surface of water, was the project’s underlying idea. On one hand was a desire to create a building mechanism that could create incredible possibilities from the point of view of energy logic and environmental awareness, an essential and symbolic aspiration for the future Spanish Pavilion at the International Exposition of Zaragoza. But on the other hand, one of the most attractive spaces one can possibly deal with, in terms of both matter and light, would be transferred to the field of architecture. Forests are changing spaces, full of hints and nuances, where concepts like verticality and depth play a key role. Read more here.

City of Jaca Hockey Arena

Brief Description: The City of Jaca Hockey Arena has been the most representative facility of the European Youth Olimpic Festival of Jaca 2007, the first event in the Pyrennes. Two ice rinks allow the pavillion to celebrate hockey, figure skating, short track curling competitions, being simultaneously a recreational ice center. The Dome takes the strength of the nearby Oroel Mount and the Pyrenee peaks, and meets directly the ground without any sort of façade. Aire de Bárdenas Hotel

Brief Description: Its name explains it all: in the middle of a wheat field, surrounded by the desertic landscape of the Bardenas Reales natural reserve, Hotel Aire de Bardenas is conceived as a shelter from the dry winds or “Aire” of the desert. Providing protection from the wind, they also create courts and multiple views in and out of the hotel. The rooms are divided into either those close to the main building with their own private court or those standing right on the wheat fields. Read more here.

Marqués de Riscal Winery Complex

Brief Description: Ciudad del Vino – City of Wine, is a complex comprising the oldest winery of Rioja, the winery of Marqués de Riscal (1858) and the new landmark complex, which houses a hotel, a spa of wine therapy, an exclusive restaurant, a meeting and conference center and a banquet hall. Like the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the building is covered with titanium. In this case, however, the architect wanted to infuse his work with the signature colors of Marqués de Riscal: pink like the wine, gold like the mesh on the Riscal bottles, and silver like the bottle top. Inside, a glass elevator descends into the cellar which holds some 3,000 bottles. Read more here.

Brief Description: The station serves as a starting point of a new urban project, which re-establishes the connectivity between the North and South of the city and leads to a large public park where the roof is an integrated part giving its geometry and topography to the volume. The opportunity to rethink the typology of the station that the burial of the tracks means, should be a shift in the form of conceiving them. Intermodal Stations are an opportunity to transform the city, creating public spaces, developing green belts, promoting pedestrian and bicycle mobility; an opportunity to create a new topography to intensify the experience of the city as a collective process. Brief Description: Settled in the middle of the Castillian Landscape, the historical town of Almazan appears strategically on the top of a walled hill, and in the higher point is where the historical remains are surrounded by the piazza, with a strong medieval flavor. Its location on top of a watchtower and the edge of a meander of the Douro river, makes  it  a public space with a great landscape value. Redesigning the sequence of viewpoints of the river and the woods surrounding the Plaza. Creating a walking tour around San Miguel and the City through gateways and flown items was the main purpose of this project. Read more here.

The Aqueduct of Segovia

Brief Description: For 2,000+ years, Aqueducto de Segovia has been conveying drinking water from the Frio River to Segovia, approximately 18 kilometers away. Built under the reign of Roman emperor Trajan, the aqueduct is one of the most intact and best-preserved Roman engineering masterpieces. To span the River Clamores outside Segovia and reach the city, they constructed the massive 270-meter-long aqueduct using over 24,000 Guadarrama granite blocks carefully fitted together to support themselves without the use of mortar. Espacio Jóven Municipal

Brief Description: The rehabilitation project of an ancient two-storey house for Municipal Youth Space involved a research on the layout of the blocks where it is located, trying to follow up the same pattern. For this purpose, the use of color bands arise in two meters across the width of the building, both in the horizontal (floor) and vertical (windows) planes. 40. Salamanca

Catedral de Salamanca

Brief Description: The new cathedral was constructed without the subsequent destruction of the old cathedral as normally happened but a wall of the new cathedral, leans on the North wall of the old one. For this reason, the old cathedral had to be reinforced, and the bell tower was constructed on the old one. The new one began at a time when the gothic style was becoming less popular and was merging with the new Renaissance style, giving the resulting Plateresco style in Spain. Among the ornate carvings on the façade is the incongruous likeness of an astronaut floating in space. The New Cathedral was undergoing restoration work during that period, and one of the artisans engaged in the project chose to engage in a bit of tradition by “signing” his work with a contemporary symbol representative of the 20th century: an astronaut. Brief Description: The San Gregorio College is one of the most outstanding buildings in Valladolid, a representative of the characteristic late Gothic in late 15th century in Spain. The traces left by each of its interventions over the years are a reflection of the real life of the building which, far from being frozen at a certain point in time, has adapted the building to a wide diversity of uses such as a college, a prison, an administration centre and now as a museum. Zamora Offices

Brief Description: Facing the cathedral and following the outline of the former convent’s kitchen garden, the project was erected inside a strong stone wall box open to the sky. Its walls and floors entirely  made of stone. The very same stone as the Cathedral. A real Hortus Conclusus. The external skin of the facade is made of glass, each single sheet measuring 600x300x1,2 and all joined together simply with structural silicone and hardly anything else. MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo)

Brief Description: The geometry of the floor plan is one of the most outstanding characteristics of the museum. A complex geometry that was inherited from certain pavements of Roman origin that by means of two polygons (square and rhomboid), which lays out a continuous regular or irregular surface on a plane. The mosaic of 37 colored glass panes that greet the visitor from the main facade was taken from the digitalization of an image of “The Falconer” from the León Cathedral. It is one of the oldest stained glass windows of the cathedral (from the 13th century). The structure is developed from an open concept, composed by several patios and “plazas”, which create a secret geography within the building. Read more here.

Centro Cívico Cultural de Palencia

Brief Description: The former Palencia Provincial Prison complex was created at the end of the XIX century, built with brick bearing walls following the “neomudéjar” style, and composed mainly of four two-storey wings and some other with one storey. On this building was planned a comprehensive refurbishment to transform the former use and convert it into a center that promotes the social and cultural activity in this part of the town.  It is a project that respects the existing building, which is given a contemporary, lighter appearance, and where the natural light will play a key role. 45. Cantabria

Palacio de Festivales de Santander

Brief Description: This building is the current site of the prestigious Santander International Festival. With a multidisciplinary approach (theater, cinema, music, dance), this cultural center offers an artistic program continued throughout the year. The predominant materials in the building are marble and copper. Its main entrance is inspired by the Greek theaters inside and out for its acoustic needs. Since its opening, the building was surrounded by controversy due to its final over cost, its monumental size, the lack of natural light in the interior and the issue that the access was through the lower part of the stage. It is dedicated to education, culture and peace.This centre is the first Oscar Niemeyer’s work in Spain, and he has said he believes it is the most important in Europe,which is the reason its name is “Centro Niemeyer”. Brief Description: Connecting the port to the historical quarter it poses a difficult challenge: a difference in floor level of more than 20m. People living at the historical quarter find it difficult to get to the port. Tourists getting to the port or the marina find it difficult to get to the historical quarter. Piscina Universitaria para el Campus de Orense

Brief Description: The plot chosen is at the highest point of the university campus, a location that gives it a special value in the relationship between the city of Orense and the campus, currently encumbered by the presence of a busy road between them. The platform is designed with bold projections supported by a strong base that, aside from spanning the existing drops, shapes the pools and contains all the water treatment services and necessary systems for the correct performance of the program. The contrast between this massive, topographic base and the cantilevering light glass surfaces surrounding the public level of swimming pools is one the basic formal arguments of the project. Brief Description: This building has been designed in order to meet changing conditions, adapting itself to the environment, the program and the weather. One of the main challenges was to create a sustainable building. Therefore, between the two layers that make up the facade system it develops a circulation path which works independently or as an annexation depending on the program. The creation of this double skin facade has allowed functional approaches that put togheter circulations and thermal efficiency. Read more here.

Brief Description: The Center for the Arts was conceived as a single container to house two buildings of diverse nature: the new Dance Conservatory of the provincial Council of A Coruña and a Provincial Museum of ambiguous content. A concrete tree that contains the school of dance into its branches and, surrounding this treelike shape it was the Museum, between the object and the limit. IN means that you’re into the Conservatory; ON means you’re at the Museum. Read more here.
